WASHINGTON … Artificial intelligence is emerging as one of the most important battlegrounds in the growing rivalry between the United States and China, as President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping sit down for talks.

The meeting comes at a time when Washington and Beijing are competing for an edge in advanced technology, semiconductors and artificial intelligence areas increasingly linked not only to economic growth but also to national security.

For Trump, maintaining America’s lead in AI has become a major strategic priority. His administration has repeatedly stressed the need for the United States to move quickly in developing powerful AI systems while limiting China’s access to some of the most advanced technologies.
China is pursuing its own ambitious AI strategy. Beijing has invested heavily in research, computing power and domestic technology companies as it seeks to reduce its dependence on Western technology and strengthen its position in the global AI race.

The challenge for both sides is finding a balance between competition and cooperation. AI is developing rapidly, raising concerns about safety, cybersecurity and the possibility of highly advanced systems being used in ways that could create new risks.
The Trump-Xi meeting is therefore about more than trade or technology. It reflects a much broader contest over who will shape the next generation of global technological development.
While the two leaders may seek areas where cooperation is possible, deep disagreements remain over technology controls, semiconductor exports, Taiwan and the wider strategic relationship between Washington and Beijing.
As AI increasingly influences economies, defence and everyday life, the race between the world’s two largest powers is becoming a defining feature of the global landscape.
