London: Mayor Sadiq Khan has stepped in to challenge a proposed Westminster Council policy that could have prevented new pubs and bars from opening in parts of Soho and the West End.
The move follows concerns over new licensing proposals that would place tighter restrictions on how customers drink and socialise in pubs and bars.
Under the policy being considered, venues could be required to discourage customers from standing while drinking a practice often described as “vertical drinking” while table service could be encouraged instead of customers ordering directly at the bar.
The proposals have sparked debate over the future character of Soho and the West End, two of London’s best-known nightlife and entertainment districts.
The Mayor has now called on Westminster Council to scrap the proposed restrictions, putting pressure on the council to reconsider its approach to licensing and London’s night time economy.
The decision comes as London continues to balance the interests of residents, businesses and the city’s vibrant hospitality and entertainment scene.
