Washington: The US Senate has overwhelmingly approved a major Russia sanctions bill that could give President Donald Trump the authority to impose tariffs of up to 100% on imports from countries continuing to purchase Russian oil and gas.
India and China are among the countries potentially affected by the legislation.
The Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026 passed the Senate by an overwhelming 86–11 vote, marking a significant escalation in Washington’s pressure on countries buying Russian energy.
⚠️ Important: The bill does not yet impose a 100% tariff on India. It would provide the president with the authority to impose tariffs of up to 100%, and the legislation still has to clear the US House of Representatives before becoming law.
The proposed measure could place further pressure on US–India trade relations and intensify the debate over India’s continued purchases of Russian energy.
