DHAKA — Bangladesh has made it clear that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s proposed visit to India will depend on New Delhi taking concrete steps to improve the bilateral environment.

Dhaka is seeking progress on the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and other fugitives wanted in Bangladesh, while also calling for a “conducive” or “propitious” atmosphere for the visit.

The proposed visit, reportedly being discussed for the August 20–25 period, has become uncertain amid continuing tensions between Dhaka and New Delhi. Bangladesh has repeatedly pressed India over Sheikh Hasina’s extradition, while India says the request is being examined under its legal framework.

The message from Dhaka is firm: Bangladesh will judge its relationship with India by India’s actions, not simply its words. The dispute over Hasina has emerged as a major test for the future of India-Bangladesh relations and for any high-level engagement between the two governments.
