By Safina khan/ London: King Charles III and Queen Camilla joined French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte Macron, at the British Museum to view the historic Bayeux Tapestry following its landmark loan to the United Kingdom.
The royal couple and the French presidential couple were welcomed at the museum by Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, who met President Macron for the first time during the visit.
Museum curators showed the distinguished guests the tapestry’s 58 scenes, explaining key moments depicted in the medieval masterpiece, including the events surrounding the Norman Conquest of England in 1066.
The group stopped to examine the scene depicting the death of Harold Godwinson, the last Anglo-Saxon King of England.
Looking closely at the famous image of Harold, King Charles remarked: “The arrow’s quite thin.”
The Bayeux Tapestry, which tells the story of the events leading up to the Norman Conquest, will open to the public next week.
The historic loan provides visitors in the UK with a rare opportunity to see one of Europe’s most significant medieval artworks in person.
