ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar has urged citizens to play an active role in disaster response and relief efforts, saying that tackling the impact of extreme weather requires a coordinated national response involving the government, media, and the public.
Speaking during a visit to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Tarar said it was the responsibility of every citizen and the wider community to support relief activities in areas affected by heavy rainfall and to remain vigilant in regions vulnerable to cloudbursts and flash floods.
He noted that several cities across Pakistan had received exceptionally heavy rainfall within a matter of days, with precipitation levels exceeding what is typically recorded over a six-month period.
“The government’s response has been highly effective, but the scale of the challenge demands continued cooperation from all segments of society,” the minister said.
Tarar said the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting would continue to work closely with the NDMA and other relevant ministries to strengthen public awareness and ensure the timely dissemination of information, in accordance with the directives of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
He emphasised that providing early warnings and accurate information was critical to minimising the loss of life and property during natural disasters.
The information minister also commended Pakistan’s media for its role in educating the public on climate-related risks and disaster preparedness.
“I appreciate the Pakistani media for taking environmental issues, early warning systems and public awareness seriously. Television channels have dedicated significant airtime through news bulletins and talk shows, while social media platforms have also played an important role in spreading timely information,” he said.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to disaster management, Tarar said all relevant institutions would continue working together to keep the public informed and provide every possible assistance to affected communities as the country confronts increasingly frequent extreme weather events.
